Part of the Grand Massif but quieter than its chic neighbour Chamonix, Les Carroz is a compact skiing town that’s perfect for family getaways. Situated at an altitude of 1140m, it is quite low (which might explain why it doesn’t get too crowded), but has a good snow record and a great range of skiing for beginners and advanced powder hounds alike. There is no better feeling than skiing right in the heart of the majestic Canadian Rocky Mountains, thanks to Bluepowder.com.au Canada ski packages.
Great Location
One of the best selling points for Les Carroz is that it is just an hour’s drive from Geneva in one of Shuttle Direct’s spacious ski transfers. Geneva is just a 90-minute flight from the UK, so the journey time is relatively short for a skiing holiday. This will be a relief for anyone who has dealt with the trauma of plane- or carsick kids!
A Pretty Savoyard Town
The resort itself boasts a traditional Savoyard town that has plenty of cafés, which serve hot chocolate and pastries to children who are tired and hungry from a day on the pistes. The fact that the town is relatively quiet is great for families, as you feel safe letting the kids explore a little and will be able to sleep without being disturbed by the whoops of party animals.
On the Slopes
As I’ve said, there is an excellent beginners’ area near the main lift, which has a ‘magic carpet’ to help little learners get up the nursery slopes. What’s more, there’s a gondola lift that will take you up to the next set of beginners runs, where you’ll also find a popular snow park that’s filled with adrenaline- and fun-filled runs. For those who already have their ski legs, there is also a limited but good range of intermediate and advanced runs, and – if there’s fresh snow – some excellent off-piste skiing.
Child-Friendly Dining
One of the most inviting elements of the resort is the excellent selection of family-friendly restaurants on the mountainside and in the town itself. One of my favourites is the Le K at the gondola lift station, which has a wonderful sunny terrace for eating outside, as well as a delicious tartiflette to warm you up on colder days. In the town, there’s an outstanding selection of traditional restaurants that also serve pizzas and other child-friendly fare to keep fussy eaters happy. I would recommend L’Agora if you and the kids are craving pizza and Aux Petits Oignons if you’d rather sample some local specialities.
Getting There
Getting from the airport couldn’t be easier if you book one of Shuttle Direct’s ski transfers.
